Humboldt residents work hard to live here because of the unique opportunity to enjoy the county’s natural beauty. By keeping the rural lands rural and investing in trails, parks, and protections for our working and wild lands, our General Plan can work to preserve and enhance safe and convenient access to the outdoors, and the health and spiritual benefits that derive from recreation and open space.
The following General Plan Elements will impact our access to nature. Click on any element to download the most recent draft from the County's website.
- Growth Planning
We should plan to accommodate projected growth, not double or triple the projected growth rate. Prevention of sprawl protects working and wild lands, parks, and trails. This section is part of the Land Use Element.
- Land Use Element
By focusing new development in our villages and small towns, the General Plan will protect wild lands near our homes and enable community members to get out of town quickly and easily.
- Community Design Element
We can create accessible parks, trails, and public spaces within our communities, giving everyone the chance to live near healthy opportunities for outdoor recreation and peace of mind.
- Conservation and Open Space Element
By protecting natural areas, we can ensure that our children and grandchildren can enjoy the natural beauty and wide open spaces of Humboldt County for generations to come.
- Circulation Element
Humboldt County has some of the highest gas prices in the U.S. Twenty-first century planning for walkable streets, trails and transit will provide working families with quick, safe, healthy, affordable and convenient access to home, work, and play.
It's up to us to speak up for this vision and ensure that the General Plan Update provides the blueprint for a future that is healthy for us all. You can help by getting involved today!
