Humboldt County’s future depends on our ability to cultivate a thriving economy that supports all members of our community. Working families need secure, living wage jobs in local industries suited to the North Coast.
We must preserve and restore our forests and rivers in order to sustain resource and recreation jobs. We can increase financial freedom and bolster local economic activity by providing affordable housing choices close to work and shopping. And by developing a diverse range of local and export businesses, we will ensure the stability and self-sufficiency needed to weather the impacts of changes in the national and global economy.
The following General Plan Elements will impact our local economy. Click on any element to download the most recent draft from the County's website.
- Economic Development Element
We must nurture entrepreneurship and create high-quality, long-term jobs for a prosperous future.
- Energy Element
A stable energy plan will ensure investment in cleaner and more efficient technologies, saving money and creating jobs.
- Housing Element
Workforce housing must be affordable at the true cost of living, including transportation and energy expenses.
- Biological Resources
Healthy ecosystems are the cornerstone of restoring salmon to Humboldt County’s rivers and protecting fishing and other resource jobs. This element has been combined with the Conservation and Open Space element.
- Agricultural Resources
Agricultural lands must be protected from sprawl to keep our family farmers on the land and enable further development of specialty agriculture, identified as a target of opportunity for our economy. This section is part of the Land Use Element.
- Conservation and Open Space Element
Protecting wild and working lands will foster long-term agricultural and resource jobs and enable viable tourism and recreation industries.
It's up to us to speak up for this vision and ensure that the General Plan Update provides the blueprint for a future that is healthy for us all. You can help by getting involved today!
